Overlook

Dalton, PA

In 1903 the Olmsted Brothers began creating a distinguished landscape for a 30,000 square foot “cottage” by architect George M. Lewis completed in 1912. Alas, the grand house was razed in the 1960’s and replaced with a “manageable” ranch house. Fortunately, our client was the forward-thinking great-grandson of the original owner, who chose to work within this small footprint, boldly remodeling the structure as a new classical house befitting the beauty of the breathtaking site. Reflecting a commitment to sustainable agriculture and biodiversity, the property now welcomes visiting graduate students from the University of Oregon’s program in Architecture and Allied Arts.

Working with Historical Concepts Architecture (GA) and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architecture (NY), we created a house that blends unique architectural character and diverse collections which celebrate history, travel, adventure and an abiding love of nature.
