Private Club

Philadelphia, PA

Sidney Martin, 1956

As this private club approached its illustrious 125th anniversary, an intensive effort was launched to align the interiors of this elegant space with its evolving mission as a magnet for women of purpose, intelligence, and energy who celebrate the city as a vital cultural haven and foster stewardship through architectural conservation and community enrichment. The library, living room, and private dining rooms were completely reimagined and express the aesthetic views the members exude.

We reinvigorated the dining room with upholstered walls, custom designed carpet, antique chandeliers, and furniture, and crowned the ceiling with trompe l’oeil wallpaper on coffered plasterwork resurrected from the Scalamandré archives. We worked with paper conservation experts to restore the original Zuber grisaille scenic wallpaper and boosted the visual wattage with swathes of lipstick red on the leather banquettes and silk drapery. The bar room sets the backdrop for convivial entertaining through its custom millwork gleaming in lacquer, brass, and marble on a brass inlaid terrazzo floor.

Private Club Guest Suites

The gracious hospitality that permeates this private women’s club is nowhere more evident than in their new guest suites. Crisp, colorful palettes were the starting point for this modern adaptation of classic Chinoiserie, rendered here in four evocative hues. Each is unique and expresses the fresh spirit and youthful energy of the next generation.
