After a devastating hurricane destroyed much of this 1980’s house located on the very tip of Absecon Island, the structure was redesigned to maximize both protection from the elements and open vistas of the sea. This was achieved by enlarging openings with storm proof doors that fold back completely to allow true indoor/outdoor living. We created a sensitive balance between maximizing the views and ensuring privacy. Another critical balance was achieved by using materials that appear luxurious but can withstand severe weather and its constant use because the family welcomes a regular flow of guests. Teak flooring complements honed marble, bronze fixtures, and woven fiber furniture. Celebrating abundant sunshine from multiple exposures, the use of natural linen, cotton, and bamboo welcomes a carefree lifestyle and create a soft palette that reflects the beauty of the surroundings.
